Former IPS officer Kuppusamy Annamalai joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, asserting that he would work to bring the “nationalist spirit” to Tamil Nadu. Known as a “no-nonsense cop”, he said that he was inspired by the “fearlessness, courage, knowledge giving spirit ” qualities of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as prescribed in Thirukkural after joining the saffron party.

He joined the BJP at the Delhi head office in the presence of TN BJP incharge Muralidhar Rao and TN state president Murugan and said he has joined the party without any condition and wanted to be a loyal soldier and bring nationalist spirit to the state of Tamil Nadu. The induction comes at the crucial time when TN BJP is looking for a popular face to project as a CM candidate if things turn sour with AIADMK in the coming election.

Attempts were made to woo Rajinikanth into the party’s fold but that did not work out.

BJP spokesperson Narayana Thirupathi claims that people from various walks of life are joining BJP and now a “youngster who was an IPS officer has joined us and this will boost morale and encourage more youth to join the party.”

While Annamalai maintained that he will contest 2021 Tamil Nadu elections, it was expected that he will be the face of Rajinikanth’s political outfit because of his association with the superstar and it gained momentum when Rajinikanth also confirmed that he will not be the CM candidate and wanted a youngster to head the government.

Now this decision has changed the equations for both Rajinikanth and BJP, say political analysts in the state.
