A 38-year-old woman was killed in the early hours of Saturday when an explosive device exploded in her hands in Thessaloniki, a northern Greek city.
Police suspect that she was trying to place the device on an ATM outside a nearby bank at about 5 a.m. when the explosion happened. “It seems that she was with an explosive device and was going to place it a bank’s ATM,” a senior police official said to Reuters. “Something went wrong and detonated in her hands,” the official said.
The explosion damaged several storefronts and passing vehicles, police said.
Police indicated the woman had prior contact with the authorities for taking part in a string of robberies. Detectives are now investigating whether or not she was connected to militant left-wing groups.
