A watershed moment unfolded in the corridors of power as Ayesha Hazarika, hailing from Assamese descent, took her oath in the esteemed House of Lords, marking a significant milestone as the first of her origin to be appointed to this prestigious upper chamber of the British Parliament.
Assuming the title of ‘Baroness Hazarika of Coatbridge’ following the grant of a life peerage, Hazarika brings a wealth of experience from diverse backgrounds, including her role as a Scottish political aide, a prominent member of the United Kingdom’s Labour Party, and a law graduate from the University of Hull.
Baroness Hazarika, known for her prior roles as a journalist and stand-up comic, adorned the traditional scarlet robes during her introduction ceremony. She was supported by fellow peers from the Labour Party, including Lord Dubs and Baroness Kennedy of the Shaws.
Expressing gratitude on her official X handle, Hazarika remarked, “Thank you for all your lovely messages. What an incredible, special day spent with family & friends. Especially my amazing parents who came here as Indian Muslim immigrants & worked so very hard. It is genuinely the honour of my life to join the House of Lords as a Labour peer (sic).”
Her historic appointment not only diversifies the composition of the House of Lords but also serves as a beacon of representation for British Asians, who continue to navigate challenges related to racism and inclusivity in the country’s political landscape. Hazarika’s journey is a testament to the ongoing strides towards a more representative and inclusive British Parliament.
