Victory Day: Russia to Halt Military Action for Three Days

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a three-day truce from May 8 until midnight on May 11 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the termination of World War II, as per a Kremlin announcement.

“Throughout the period, all military operations will be halted. Russia thinks that the Ukrainian side must set an example,” the Kremlin stated. The statement also cautioned, however, that if Ukraine breaks the ceasefire, Russia’s armed forces would provide an “adequate and effective response.”

Understanding Victory Day

This coming month commemorates 80 years after the Soviet Union and its allies gained victory during World War II. World War II Victory Day is the occasion that marks the Allies’ approval of Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8, 1945, thus effectively ending the war in Europe.

In America, the day is also celebrated as V-E Day, or Victory in Europe Day. In Russia, the day is observed as Victory Day on 9 May. Russians call World War II the “Great Patriotic War.” Every year, Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks on May 9 to commemorate the day.
