US Secretary: Could Ban Chinese Connected Vehicles Or Impose Restrictions

US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo announced on Wednesday, that the Biden administration can take extreme action and ban Chinese-connected vehicles or impose restrictions.

But it’ll first take public extensive public comments into account.

“We have to digest all the data and then figure out what action we want to take,” Raimondo said. “We could take extreme action, which is to say no Chinese-connected vehicles in the United States or look for mitigation said Raimondo.

In late February, the department announced the initiation of a probe into whether imports of Chinese vehicles pose a national security threat. It invited public comments on the matter until April 30.

As per the brief interview given to Reuters, the department is already reviewing public comments.

This announcement came around the time, when US administration is undertaking national security investigation into China-made electric vehicles.

Earlier, in February, the white house also announced that these vehicles collect a lot of sensitive data of their drivers and passengers. They also make use of cameras and sensors to gather detailed information on US infrastructure.

However, white house informed reporters in February, that’s it’s too early to decide, what action will be taken against Chinese connected vehicles.

Later, Raimondo too expressed concerns about collection of data by Chinese made vehicles at the US house of Representative.

Further she earlier emphasized that US needs “to take the threat much more seriously “regarding Chinese connected vehicles.

But for the first time, there has been an open consideration of a ban on Chinese vehicles in USA.
