Thailand: Activist Netiporn Sanae-sangkhom Dies After 65-Day Hunger Strike In Jail

The passing of Netiporn Sanae-sangkhom, a 28-year-old activist in Thailand, has sent shockwaves through the nation and reignited calls for reforms to the judicial system. Netiporn, who had been on a 65-day hunger strike while detained for advocating reforms to Thailand’s monarchy system, died in a prison hospital on Tuesday, as reported by CNN.

Netiporn had been in custody since January 26 and had been on a hunger strike until the end of April, according to Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. The news of her death has prompted widespread mourning and renewed concerns about the treatment of activists and the justice system in Thailand.

The corrections department confirmed that Netiporn experienced cardiac arrest on Tuesday morning and was unresponsive to treatment. Despite efforts by medical professionals to resuscitate her, she did not respond and was subsequently transferred to Bangkok’s Thammasat University Hospital, where she passed away. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Netiporn was a member of the activist group Thalu Wang, which advocates for reforms to Thailand’s monarchy and amendments to the country’s lese majeste law, known for its severe penalties for criticism of the royal family. Her involvement in the 2020 youth-led protests, which called for constitutional, democratic, and military reforms, drew attention to the broader push for societal change in Thailand.

During her time in detention, Netiporn’s health deteriorated, leading to her hunger strike and subsequent hospitalizations. Her case highlighted concerns about the treatment of political dissidents and the denial of bail for activists awaiting trial.

Amnesty International and other human rights organizations have condemned Netiporn’s death, calling it a stark reminder of the challenges faced by pro-democracy activists in Thailand. They have urged authorities to drop charges against activists and release those unjustly detained, emphasizing the need for fair treatment and respect for human rights.

Following her passing, supporters gathered for a candlelight vigil outside the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court, demonstrating solidarity with activists like Netiporn and demanding reforms to the justice system. The tragic incident has galvanized calls for change and raised awareness about the ongoing struggle for democracy and civil liberties in Thailand.
