Taiwan slams Russia’s call that it is an “integral part of China.”

Taiwan declared that the “Chinese Communist Party regime has never governed Taiwan” and slammed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for referring to it as a “integral part of China.”

The Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) rejected Lavrov’s allegations in a statement. China and Taiwan are independent of one another, the ministry repeated, adding that the “Chinese Communist Party regime has never governed Taiwan,” according to Taiwan News.
According to the ministry, Taiwan is a “modern democratic country” that respects the rule of law and human rights.

It continued on, “No distorted narrative disparaging Taiwan’s sovereign status” can change the Taiwan Strait’s globally recognized status quo.

During a joint news conference with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Tuesday, April 9, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Taiwan is an essential part of China. This statement drove an immediate reaction from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), which dismissed the statements as “false claims,” according to Taiwan News.

During the press conference, Lavrov stated claimed Taiwan is an “integral part of China” and “an internal affair of the People’s Republic of China,”

The ministry reportedly stated that “collusion” between Beijing and Moscow did not support regional and strait stability, according to Taiwan News. It said that the two nations’ “authoritarian convergence” causes “serious damage” to global peace, stability, and the rules-based international order.

“Taiwan is on the strategic front line, safeguarding the values of democracy and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region,” stated MOFA. The ministry stated that Taiwan’s position on upholding its territorial integrity is “staunch and unchanged.”

MOFA also emphasized Taiwan’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with like-minded countries in order to “jointly resist communist China’s rhetorical and military intimidation and curb authoritarian expansionism, It concluded by stating that this commitment will promote global economic security and prosperity as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Following the first-ever trilateral summit in Washington, DC, on Thursday, Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry commended US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in an official post on X for their reaffirmation of stability in the Taiwan Strait.
