Portillo’s, a well-known fast-food chain in Chicago, is marking the historic election of Pope Leo XIV with a special new menu item. The restaurant has launched a limited-edition Italian beef sandwich called “The Leo,” named in tribute to the newly elected Pope, formerly known as Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost. This sandwich will be available until May 31, in celebration of Italian Beef Month.

Portillo’s Introduces “The Leo” with a Divine Touch
Portillo’s proudly announced the launch of the sandwich with a playful message on Instagram: “In the name of the gravy, the bun, and hot giard – we introduce The Leo: divinely seasoned Italian Beef, baptized in gravy.”
A Bold Sandwich for a Historic Moment
According to a press release shared with PEOPLE, the new sandwich reflects a deep connection to Portillo’s roots in Chicago. “Our original sacred sandwich, bold, unapologetically flavorful, and made in honor of a moment that’s historic for Portillo’s hometown,” the company stated. The sandwich features Italian beef soaked in savory gravy. Customers can choose from sweet peppers, hot peppers, or a mix of both as toppings. Priced at $8.29, The Leo is being served at all Portillo’s locations, both in person and online, including kiosk orders, as confirmed by a Portillo’s spokesperson.
Available Only Through May
While fans are excited, the sandwich won’t be around for long. It’s only available during May, which is also Italian Beef Month. “This heavenly creation is available for the month of May (Italian Beef Month),” the company said in its release.
Capturing Chicago’s Pride and Flavor
Portillo’s also shared the meaning behind the sandwich. Leo “channels the passion, flavor, and pride that Chicagoans are known for — right down to the last juicy bite,” the release added.
