PM Modi, UN Chief Discuss AI Equity at Paris Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Paris on the sidelines of the AI Action Summit. The meeting focused on AI governance, equitable access, and the need to bridge the gap between developed and developing nations.

Following the meeting, PM Modi shared on X, “Happy to have met UN Secretary-General, Mr. Antonio Guterres in Paris.”

Guterres Stresses AI Equity

In his speech at the summit, Guterres warned against the concentration of AI capabilities among a few nations, which could widen geopolitical divides. “We must prevent a world of AI ‘haves’ and ‘have-nots’,” he stated, emphasizing the need for AI to promote inclusivity rather than inequality.

PM Modi Calls for AI Democratization

Co-chairing the AI Action Summit alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi highlighted that the world is at the dawn of an AI-driven era, reshaping global polity, economy, and society.

He stressed the importance of global cooperation in setting governance standards that balance innovation with risk management. He also advocated for AI to be accessible to all, particularly benefiting the Global South.

India’s AI Initiatives and Next Summit Announcement

PM Modi showcased India’s success in developing Digital Public Infrastructure for its 1.4 billion citizens using open technology. He also revealed India’s efforts in building a Large Language Model tailored to its diverse population.

Announcing India’s leadership in AI development, he declared that India will host the next AI Summit.

India-France AI Collaboration

PM Modi noted the strong India-France partnership in sustainability, exemplified by the International Solar Alliance. He emphasized that the two nations are now working together to ensure AI development is smart, responsible, and inclusive.

High-Level Segment at Elysee Palace

The AI Action Summit culminated in a High-Level Segment, featuring a dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Elysee Palace. The gathering brought together global leaders, policymakers, AI industry experts, and CEOs of major AI companies.

The discussions from the summit are expected to shape AI policies worldwide, promoting equitable AI growth while ensuring ethical and responsible governance.
