Spain and parts of Portugal and France lost power on Monday, April 28, which caused mass disruptions in major cities like Madrid, Seville, and Lisbon. Citizens were plunged into darkness with no electricity or mobile phone networks.

As per regional media reports, the underground network in Madrid saw evacuations as a result of the power outage, and the traffic lights in the city have ceased to function. Valencia’s metro system has suspended all its operations, while Barcelona saw thousands of commuters evacuated after the metro system was affected, according to the Spanish news agency El Mundo.

Madrid’s Barajas International Airport has also been impacted, with delays in arrivals and departures. Aena, the public corporation operating most of Spain’s airports, said:
“Because of the power outage, some accidents are happening at the aeropuertos. Backup generators are running. Contact your airline, as there may be problems with access and ground transport.”

Backup generators have been installed at airports throughout Spain to deal with the situation. In spite of the mayhem throughout the peninsula, Gibraltar seems to be the only area that is not affected by the blackout.

The outage had its effects in the Madrid Open tennis tournament also, as two singles matches and one doubles match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament were halted. Electronic line calling and scoreboards went off in Manolo Santana Stadium.
