Spain’s national power grid operator Redeia said on Tuesday that electricity was progressively being restored on La Palma after a mass blackout on the Canary island.
The regional government said the blackout was caused by a technical fault at the Los Guinchos power station in the eastern sector of the island. The plant belongs to utility company Endesa, and the technical fault was confirmed by the company.
The blackout started around 5:30 p.m. local time (1630 GMT), Spanish broadcaster RTVE reported. By 7:10 p.m., Redeia had restored 6.2 megawatts of power to the island, and it was possible to resume the basic services gradually.
La Palma, the Canary Islands’ third-smallest island in Spain, suffered from the latest of a string of power cuts. The event is the follow-up to a large blackout on April 28 that hit most of Spain and Portugal, generating widespread traffic jams, suspending train services, and stranding many people in elevators.
Authorities are making progress restoring power in full and probing the cause of the generator breakdown. There have been no reported injuries or major incidents related to the power outage.
Local officials have urged residents to be patient as full service will return later in the evening.
