King Charles Leads Military Tribute on 80th VE Day with Royal Family

King Charles was at the head of the 80 th VE Day parade in London on May 5, 2025, celebrating World War II heroes. The monarch, accompanied by Queen Camilla and other senior royals, saluted soldiers, sailors, and airmen as they marched through the capital.

The big show kicked off a week-long celebration of Victory in Europe (VE) Day. During the course of the event, the royal family made personal tribute to veterans, and thousands of the public came to pay their respects.

A Grand Parade Starts with Tribute

The parade started at noon when Big Ben tolled twelve. Timothy Spall, an actor, then recited Winston Churchill’s original VE Day speech in 1945. This evocative moment set the seal.

Then, Alan Kennett, a 100-year-old veteran of Normandy, consented to being the parade’s starting point. He marched proudly under the Torch for Peace as more than 1,300 military personnel marched behind him. Their procession along the Mall celebrated both previous sacrifices and current service.

Royal Family Stands with Veterans

King Charles saluted the Armed Forces while standing at attention. Queen Camilla, at his side, smiled and shook hands with seated veterans. Prince William and Princess Catherine brought their children—George, Charlotte, and Louis—who chatted with ex-soldiers. They added warmth and represented the connection between generations.

Subsequently, the royal household walked out onto the Buckingham Palace balcony. Precisely at 1:45 PM, a Royal Air Force flypast rumbled overhead. The procession consisted of 24 aircraft—ranging from Spitfires and Hurricanes to contemporary jets and the Red Arrows. Spectators applauded as the planes flew by, filling the sky with national pride.

Allies Join the March

NATO and Commonwealth troops also marched. Their presence served as a reminder of the international unity that ended WWII. Ukrainian troops were greeted with loud applause from the crowd, symbolizing today’s solidarity and support.

VE Day week continues. On May 6, Queen Camilla will unveil a ceramic poppy display at the Tower of London. Then, on May 8, a Service of Thanksgiving will be held at Westminster Abbey. After that, the country will come together for a musical tribute concert.

Legacy of Strength and Unity

This year’s parade did more than just celebrate history. It reminded Britain of its core values—resilience, sacrifice, and togetherness. King Charles demonstrated leadership and empathy. The public displayed appreciation.  Together, they respected the past while embracing the future.
