India-Spain, EU Ties: A Stabilizing Factor in Global Turbulence

Madrid [Spain]: External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar addressed the 9th Annual Conference of Ambassadors, organized by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Madrid. He emphasized the strengthening of India’s ties with Spain and the European Union (EU) as a crucial stabilizing factor during times of global turbulence.

Cultural Diplomacy as a Foundation

During his address, Jaishankar stressed the importance of cultural heritage and multiple identities in shaping diplomatic strategies. “Countries that draw from their traditions and heritage to establish a distinct brand of diplomacy are better equipped to navigate global uncertainties,” he remarked.

He also thanked Spain’s Foreign Minister, Jose Manuel Albares, for the invitation and applauded Spain’s role as a strong advocate for robust India-EU ties.

Key Areas of Bilateral Cooperation

Following the conference, Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with Albares, discussing bilateral cooperation in:

  • Trade and Investment
  • Defence and Security
  • Urban Development
  • Railways and Green Hydrogen
  • Climate Action
  • People-to-People Exchanges

The two nations signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on sports and sustainable urban development.

India-Spain 2026 Cultural Year

Jaishankar highlighted the upcoming celebrations of 2026 as the Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI between India and Spain. “Our exchanges in 2025 will create new momentum for India-Spain ties and enhance cooperation,” he noted.

Global and Regional Perspectives

The leaders also exchanged views on pressing global and regional issues, including developments in Ukraine, West Asia, and the Indo-Pacific, as well as their collaboration in the UN, G20, and Mediterranean regions.
