In a tasty bid to shatter records, French pastry cooks under Youssef El Gatou have finished a 121.8-metre-long strawberry cake, reportedly the longest one in the world. It is approximately 1.2 tonnes heavy, took a week to prepare, and was showcased in an ice rink in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil.

The ambitious task, in which 20 chefs took part, surpassed the previous record of a 100.48-metre cake made in San Mauro Torinese, Italy, in 2019.

A Feast of Ingredients

In order to prepare the cake, the group used a humongous list of ingredients like 4,000 eggs, 350kg strawberries, 150kg sugar, and 415kg cream. To qualify to enter the Guinness World Records book, the cake was built to be at least eight centimetres wide and tall.

The size of the project posed logistical issues. “We used blowtorches to heat the bowl” for blending the cream, said Nadia El Gatou, Youssef’s wife.

A Childhood Dream Come True

El Gatou said his childhood dream of setting a record had been with him since he was young. “I was searching for a product, or a French cake, and I also wanted to spot the light on farm produce, so French strawberries and products like milk, cream and butter,” he explained to AFP.

Following the unveiling of the masterpiece, the people of Argenteuil were invited to take home a portion of the calorie-laden work, making the event a community sweet celebration.
