Israel-Iran tensions: These countries issue travel advisory; US warns Iran

Several countries, including France, India, Russia, Poland, and the United Kingdom, have cautioned their citizens against traveling to Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories, and neighboring areas following threats of potential Iranian reprisals due to a recent strike on its consulate in Damascus.

Iran’s warning of retaliation over the April 1 strike in Damascus, resulting in casualties including two generals from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, has sparked concerns of heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs advised against travel to Iran, Lebanon, Israel, and the Palestinian territories, announcing the return of relatives of diplomats based in Iran and imposing a ban on French civil servants’ missions in these regions.

The UK urged its citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Israel and Palestine, citing the risk of a potential attack on Israeli territory by Iran. The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office extended its warning to include all travel to certain areas in northern Israel, the Gaza Strip, and parts of the occupied West Bank.

Russia recommended its citizens refrain from traveling to the region due to security risks in Israel, Lebanon, and Palestine, particularly emphasizing instability in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict zone and the ‘Blue Line’ area between Lebanon and Israel.

Poland’s Foreign Ministry also advised against travel to Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon, highlighting concerns of sudden escalations in military operations and potential difficulties in leaving these countries.

India issued a statement advising its citizens against traveling to Iran and Israel until further notice, urging those already present to exercise caution and minimize movement.

Germany instructed its citizens to leave Iran due to escalating tensions, warning of potential arbitrary arrests and interrogation, especially for dual citizens with Iranian and German nationality.

The United States restricted personal travel for its employees in Israel and their families to specific areas, citing the real and viable threat of an imminent attack by Iran. President Joe Biden reaffirmed the US’s commitment to Israel’s defense, pledging support and assistance against potential threats from Iran.

Amidst diplomatic strains over Israel’s military actions in Gaza, US President Joe Biden stated that he anticipated Iran to make an attempt to attack Israel in the near future and vowed “ironclad” support for Washington’s foremost regional ally. “We are devoted to the defence of Israel, we will support Israel, we will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” he declared.

US General Erik Kurilla is in Israel for discussions with military officials regarding security threats, with the trip expedited due to recent developments. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant affirmed close cooperation between the US and Israel in addressing potential threats, emphasizing readiness to defend against any aggression.
