Duth Ambassador Marisa Gerards, began the Dutch National Day celebrations in New Delhi on a solemn note on Wednesday. She extended her nation’s heartfelt condolences to India over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives. Addressing diplomats, dignitaries, and members of the media at the event, Gerards strongly condemned the attack. She reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for India during this difficult time.

“You can count on us,” she said, making a clear statement of solidarity in the wake of one of the deadliest terror attacks on Indian soil in nearly two decades. The assault, which targeted civilians at a popular tourist destination, has triggered widespread national and international condemnation.

Diplomatic Solidarity

Gerards’ remarks were among the first public expressions of support from a European envoy. This came in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. “We are deeply saddened by the loss of innocent lives and stand with the people and government of India,” she added. The Dutch envoy’s words were met with appreciation by Indian officials attending the event.

The Dutch National Day, which commemorates the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, is typically a festive occasion. However, this year’s celebration struck a tone of empathy and political awareness, as ongoing India-Pakistan tensions followed the terror incident.

Wider International Reaction

The Pahalgam attack has heightened regional and international concerns over South Asia’s security landscape. India has blamed Pakistan-based militant groups for the incident. This prompted a series of retaliatory steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, reducing diplomatic ties, and closing key border crossings.

Countries across the globe have condemned the violence, and several foreign missions in India have expressed grief and pledged cooperation. The Netherlands’ show of support adds to the growing chorus of voices backing India’s right to security and justice.
