An Indian tourist group visiting Austria is being criticised online for what many are calling entitled behaviour during a recent street performance in Innsbruck. The incident involved a group of 43 Gujarati-Marwari tourists who asked two local street performers to play Garba music for them.
What Happened In The Video?
According to a video and narration shared online, the tourists were walking through the old town of Innsbruck when they came across two musicians performing in the street. Wanting to dance, the group asked the artists to play a Garba song on their speaker. At first, the performers declined, saying they might get into trouble with the local authorities. However, after repeated requests, they gave in and allowed the group to use their equipment.

What followed was about five minutes of Garba dancing in a circle, with the rest of the tourists joining in while onlookers stopped to watch. This video received a lot of hate online, with social media users calling out the group’s misbehaviour and disrespect.
Backlash On The Video
On social media, the tourists were trolled for not respecting the performers’ concerns and for pushing their own culture into a public setting in another country. One person commented, “Requesting once is fine, but insisting until you get your way is not. You embarrassed the country.”
Another user shared, saying they once saw a group of Gujarati tourists stop a Rajasthani folk performance to play Garba music and involve the local dancers against their will. They expressed that the incident made them uncomfortable.
Some users online even suggested that the group should be barred from getting European visas in the future for their behaviour.
This isn’t the first time Indian tourists have sparked headlines abroad. Previously, an Indian Baraat temporarily took over New York City’s famous Wall Street. This raised a question of public decency and safety.
