Christoph Heusgen’s Emotional Closing Marks End of His MSC Chairmanship | Watch

Christoph Heusgen, chairman of the Munich Security Conference (MSC), emotionally closed the 61st MSC, marking the end of his term, which began in 2022. In his final remarks, Heusgen reflected on the challenges faced during his leadership and the shifting dynamics in international relations.

Gratitude for Leaders and Zelensky

Heusgen thanked European leaders for their participation and support throughout the conference. He specifically acknowledged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his strong response to controversial remarks made by US Vice President JD Vance.

Concerns Over Shared Values

Heusgen voiced concerns about the erosion of common values between Europe and the United States. He recalled how the MSC began as a trans-Atlantic forum, but Vice President Vance’s speech, in which he criticized Europe for allegedly suppressing free speech and failing to uphold democracy, raised doubts about the unity of Western values.

Pushback from European Leaders

Vance’s speech sparked backlash from European leaders, including German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who rejected the criticism. This disagreement highlighted the growing divide in political views between the US and Europe.

Heusgen’s Call for Unity

In his closing words, Heusgen emphasized the need for unity, despite the challenges and differences. He reminded attendees that the MSC’s mission is to promote dialogue, democracy, and international cooperation. He expressed hope that the international community would continue to stand firm in defending these values.
