6.1-magnitude earthquake shakes Taiwan

On Tuesday, Taiwan experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The quake’s epicenter was situated at Latitude 23.69 and Longitude 121.85, with a depth of 87 kilometers.

The NCS shared details of the earthquake via a post on X, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude:6.1, Occurred on 23-04-2024, 00:02:55 IST, Lat: 23.69 & Long: 121.85, Depth: 87 Km, Region: Taiwan.”

Additionally, Central News Agency Focus Taiwan reported that on Monday, within a span of 9 minutes, five earthquakes struck Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, in eastern Taiwan. This seismic activity took place between 5:08 pm and 5:17 pm local time.

Just two weeks prior to this event, a significant earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter Scale hit Taiwan’s eastern shores, resulting in four fatalities and over 700 injuries. The US Geological Survey (USGS) described it as a “Notable quake” with preliminary information stating, “M 6.5 – 11 km NE of Hualien City, Taiwan.”

According to the National Fire Agency, the quake on April 3 caused casualties primarily in Hualien County, near the epicenter, with four fatalities and over 700 injuries, 132 of which occurred in Hualien County.
