A new documentary on Amazon Prime, The Age of Disclosure, has propelled the UFO conversations back into the mainstream with claims that former US president George HW Bush was briefed about a reported alien encounter in 1964.
The account, through interviews with scientists and former government advisers has raised eyebrows but also open questions as to why verifiable evidence is not available in support.
The documentary revisits a decades-old allegation involving Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico. Astrophysicist Eric Davis says that Bush privately told him during a 2003 conversation that he had been informed about three unidentified craft approaching the base almost 60 years earlier.
Davis said that Bush related that one of the crafts landed, after which a non-human being allegedly interacted with Air Force and CIA personnel. Bush, despite his background as a Navy pilot and his later role as CIA director, was reportedly denied further information.

The film includes Davis and Hal Puthoff, both previously connected with the Pentagon's Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.
Neither of them shows physical evidence, but both indicate that the government has retrieved various types of unknown beings and technologies. Their credibility has made the claims harder to dismiss out of hand, even as critics push for substantiation.
The documentary also features accounts from Stanford immunologist Gary Nolan, who says he has studied military personnel claiming health effects after UAP exposure. These include severe burns, neurological symptoms and unexplained internal scarring.

Nolan frames these cases not as science fiction but as medical evidence that something unknown has been interacting with humans.
Director Dan Farah maintains the film might pivot the public discussion toward disclosure. He thinks the build-up of testimony and expertise might compel a president to come forward publicly and acknowledge the chances that out-of-this-world life could exist.
As to whether this is actual progress or just another wave of UFO mania, only time will tell, but the documentary has undoubtedly re-sparked debate over what the government knows.
