A Constitution bench led by CJI DY Chandrachud upheld the reorganisation of Ladakh as a Union Territory, citing Article 3, which prohibits designation of a part of the state as a Union Territory (UT). Subsequently, it asked the Central government to expedite the process of restoring statehood for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
