EC to honour actor Rajkummar Rao as a ‘national icon’ today

Renowned actor Rajkummar Rao is set to be honoured as a “National Icon” by the Election Commission of India (ECI). The EC designates eminent individuals as national icons to inspire and encourage voters’ participation in elections.

Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar will formally appoint Rao as a “National Icon” by the EC on Thursday. Rao’s portrayal as a principled government clerk who is determined to conduct a free-and-fair election in the Naxal-affected areas of Chhattisgarh, overcoming the cynicism and apathy of a security officer, won accolades.

The film “Newton” earned the National Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and was India’s submission for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Awards, commonly known as the Oscars.
