Disney has revealed a new glimpse into the highly anticipated sequel to the 2016 hit movie ‘Moana.’ Shared on X, the image showcases an older Moana confidently sailing while holding an oar. Although details about ‘Moana 2’ are scarce, it is slated for a theatrical release this November.
Earlier in February, Disney had announced the sequel to ‘Moana.’ According to Variety, Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, disclosed the news on CNBC prior to Disney’s first-quarter fiscal 2024 earnings report. Initially planned as a television series, the second installment of ‘Moana’ was upgraded to a feature film after Iger was impressed with the initial footage.
‘Moana 2’ promises to take audiences on an “expansive new voyage with Moana, Maui, and a brand-new crew of unlikely seafarers.” As per Disney’s description, Moana embarks on a journey to the far seas of Oceania and into perilous, long-lost waters following an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, encountering an adventure unlike any before.
Directed by Dave Derrick Jr., the sequel will feature music from Abigail Barlow, Emily Bear, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, who contributed to the original film. However, Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for creating iconic songs for ‘Moana,’ is unlikely to contribute fresh material for the sequel.
The first ‘Moana’ was a box office success, grossing over $680 million. It also received renewed attention on Disney+ last year, accumulating 1 billion hours of streaming. Disney’s decision to release ‘Moana 2’ in theaters follows a disappointing box office performance in 2023, marked by underwhelming releases like ‘Wish’ from Disney Animation, alongside other disappointments such as ‘The Marvels,’ ‘Haunted Mansion,’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.’
