International Women’s Day 2021: Celebrate the spirit of womanhood with these Bollywood films
New Delhi [India], March 6 (ANI): Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day is observed to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Despite various challenges posed by society, women have proved their mettle in every sphere across the world.
The seeds of International Women’s Day, which grew out of the labour movement to become an UN-recognised annual event, were planted all the way back in the year 1908 when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and their right to vote. A year later it was the Socialist Party of America who declared the first National Woman’s Day.
For decades the entertainment industry has also played its part in highlighting the gender-related issues that are usually swept under the carpet. Cinema at times, speaks the truth while depicting the reality of the society we live in and at times it takes us into a fantasy world.
Here is a list of movies that are not just a full-package of entertainment but will also leave you with an aftertaste of inspiration and some encouragement to believe in yourself.
1. English Vinglish
Helmed by Gauri Shinde, the movie was released in 2012 and starred late actor Sridevi in the lead role. The story of the film revolved around how an Indian housewife endures small slights from her well-educated daughter and husband because of her inability to speak English. Luck holds her when she travels abroad and joins an English learning class.
Starring Kangna Ranaut in the lead, the movie proves that a woman can do anything with or without a man. Kangana portrays the role of Rani, who is devastated after her fiance (played by Rajkummar Rao) leaves her just before the wedding. Undeterred, she decides to go on their honeymoon alone where she gets pulled out of her comfort zone and rediscovers herself.
The film makes everyone understand the meaning of “no means no”. Starring Taapsee Pannu, it is a female-centric movie, in which she plays Minal, who after being molested along with her friends tries to file an FIR against a politician’s nephew. When the subsequent case gets rigged, Deepak, a retired lawyer (Amitabh Bachchan), helps them to fight the case.
4. Shakuntla Devi
This is a biopic starring Vidhya Balan as famous Indian mathematician Shakuntla Devi. Gifted with an unhinged talent for mathematics, Shakuntala Devi travels all over the world. When people start recognising her talent, they soon dub her as a human-computer. Vidya has nailed the portrayal of the mathematician in the film, which released on Amazon Prime and opened to rave reviews from viewers and critics alike.
5. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi
This Kangana Ranaut-starrer film is a biographical period drama in which she portrays Rani Laxmibai, the wife of the king of Jhansi, who refuses to bow down when the East India Company tries to annex the kingdom. Her rebellion soon turns into a fiery revolution against the British Raj.
Based on a true story, actor Sonam Kapoor plays the role of Neerja, who was a flight attendant, who boarded Pan Am flight 73 in 1986. The film tells the story of Neerja and what happens when the flight is hijacked by terrorists. In the heart-touching biopic, Neerja risks her life to stall the terrorists from attacking the passengers on board.
Helmed by Anubhav Sinha and starring Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in lead, the film narrates the ordeal of women who face domestic violence. Amrita (Taapsee), who is a young woman, leading a content life with her husband, Vikram (Pavail). Her happiness is shattered when he slaps her at an office party causing her to file for a divorce.

Anurag Kashyap resumes ‘Dobaaraa’ shoot after IT raid, sends love to haters
New Delhi [India], March 6 (ANI): Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap on Saturday shared a BTS picture from the sets of his upcoming movie ‘Dobaaraa’, restarting the shooting of the film after a raid was conducted at his property by the Income Tax Department on Wednesday.
The ‘Ugly’ director took to his social media handles and shared a BTS still with Taapsee Pannu from the sets of their outing ‘Dobaaraa’, announcing that they have resumed the movie’s shoot. He wrote, “And we restart #DoBaaraa… with all our love to all the haters…”
In the picture, Taapsee can be seen smiling candidly, looking stunning in her light-coloured saree, as Anurag playfully sits in her lap, with both of them posing for the camera.
‘Dobaaraa’ marks the duo’s third collaboration after 2018’s hit ‘Manmarziyaan’ and biographical drama ‘Saand Ki Aankh’, which had Anurag on board as a producer.
The movie will be produced by Cult Movies – a division under Ekta Kapoor’s Balaji Telefilms, along with Sunir Kheterpal’s ATHENA and Gaurav Bose’s The Vermillion World Production.
This post from Anurag came hours after Taapsee ended her silence on social media regarding the IT raids, writing she was not ‘so sasti anymore’.
The actor and director resumed the shooting of their upcoming movie nearly three days after the Income Tax Department on March 3 began raiding entities connected to Taapsee and Anurag as well as his partners in the production house Phantom Films including film producer Vikas Bahl.
Raids were carried out across 30 locations in Mumbai and Pune. Reliance Entertainment group CEO Shibhasish Sarkar and some executives of celebrity and talent management companies KWAN and Exceed were also covered.
Phantom Films was established by Anurag Kashyap, director Vikramaditya Motwane, producer Madhu Mantena and the former head of UTV Spotboy, Vikas Bahl, in 2011 before being dissolved in 2018.
Several political leaders and celebrities have reacted to the IT raids, including Rahul Gandhi and the Shiv Sena.
Anurag and Taapsee are outspoken critics of the government and have lent their support to various causes, including the ongoing farmer protests against the three farm laws. (ANI)
Miley Cyrus opens up about her ‘identity crisis’ after playing Hannah Montana
Washington [US], March 6 (ANI): American singer Miley Cyrus recently opened up about the ‘identity crisis’ she suffered after playing the role of Hannah Montana in Disney Channel’s famous sitcom ‘Hannah Montana’.
As per E! News, in a recent interview with Spotify’s Rock This with host Allison Hagendorf, the ‘Plastic Hearts’ hitmaker spoke about how her early days of fame on the popular show in which she played a teen also named Miley who had a secret identity as a superstar, messed with her head.
“Talk about an identity crisis,” she said of playing the titular role of the regular teen by day, pop star by night on the show for seasons from 2006 to 2011.
“I had gone from being a character almost as often as I was myself. And actually, the concept of the show is that when you’re this character, when you have this alter ego, you’re valuable. You’ve got like millions of fans, you’re like the biggest star in the world. And then the concept was that when I looked like myself when I didn’t have the wig on anymore, that no one cared about me. I wasn’t a star anymore,” Cyrus said.
“So, that was drilled into my head. Like, without being Hannah Montana, no one cares about you. And that was the concept,” the singer added.
Cyrus said she “really had to break that” mentality, adding that her album ‘Bangerz’ was her first foray into finding her identity outside of the popular Disney channel character.
She said, “And so I really had to break that and I think that’s maybe why I almost created a characterized version of myself at times. … I never created a character where it wasn’t me, but I was aware of how people saw me and I may be played into it a little bit.”
In a December interview with Rolling Stone, Cyrus said that she “felt like I was never going to amount to the success of Hannah Montana,” adding that she “had to evolve” because the character was “larger than life.”
She added, “Really, Hannah Montana was not a character. The concept of the show, it’s me. I’ve had to really come to terms with that and not be third-person about it.”
Cyrus has still been able to look back on her Hannah Montana days with a lighthearted lens. Earlier this week, Cyrus joked around about the character on social media with Lil Nas X and Megan Thee Stallion.
The singer paid homage to her former alter ego in a TikTok duet with Nas X and a tweet about a collaboration with Megan. (ANI)
Meghan Markle tells Oprah Winfrey it’s ‘liberating’ to speak out after royal exit
Washington [US], March 6 (ANI): Fans are getting yet another sneak peek at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s tell-all interview with American talk show host Oprah Winfrey, which is scheduled to air on Sunday.
In the latest teaser, which was released on Friday, Oprah revealed she actually reached out to Meghan for an interview three years ago, before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal wedding in 2018, and that her request was declined.
“So, I just want to say that I called you either February or March 2018 before the wedding asking, ‘Would you please give me an interview?'” Oprah recalled, “And you said, ‘I’m sorry it’s not the right time.’ And finally, we get to sit down and have this conversation.”
Meghan said she remembered it well and claimed that she “wasn’t even allowed to have that conversation” with Oprah personally and that other people had to be on the call.
Looking back, Oprah noted Meghan turned her down “nicely” and said, “‘Perhaps there will be another time when there’s the right time.'”
When asked what was right about this time, Meghan pointed to “so many things.”
“That we’re on the other side of a lot of, a lot of life experience that’s happened. And also that we have the ability to make our own choices in a way that I couldn’t have said yes to you then. That wasn’t my choice to make,” she explained.
Meghan further said, “So, as an adult who lived a really independent life to then go into this construct that is different than I think what people imagine it to be, it’s really liberating to be able to have the right and the privilege in some ways to be able to say, ‘Yes, I’m ready to talk.’ To say it for yourself….To be able to just make a choice on your own and just be able to speak for yourself.”
Previously released clips also showed Harry opening up. The couple has referred to the British tabloids’ treatment of Meghan as “bullying” before, and in the teaser of the upcoming interview with Oprah, Harry expressed his fear of “history repeating itself,” referring to Princess Diana’s death.
“I am just really relieved and happy to be sitting here, talking to you, with my wife by my side. Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her going through this process by herself all those years ago. Because it has been unbelievably tough for the two of us, but at least we have each other,” he said.
The forthcoming interview comes weeks after it was confirmed that Harry and Meghan will not be returning as working members of the royal family.
The interview titled ‘Oprah With Meghan and Harry: A CBS Primetime Special’ will air Sunday on CBS.
The interview is expected to cover Meghan’s journey from stepping into life as a royal to marriage, motherhood, philanthropic work, and facing intense public pressure. Harry will then join his wife to talk about their historic move to the United States.
The special is produced by Harpo Productions. Terry Wood and Tara Montgomery will executive produce, along with co-executive producer Brian Piotrowicz.
In early 2020, Meghan and Harry had announced that they were quitting royal duties and moving to North America, citing what they said were the unbearable intrusions and racist attitudes of the British media. They live in Santa Barbara, California, and are expecting their second child.
Apart from the upcoming interview, the pair struck a major multi-year deal with Netflix in September that will see them developing documentaries, feature films, scripted television shows, and children’s series.
They also recently launched a podcast on Spotify under their Archwell Audio production company, with the goal of building “community through shared experience, narratives, and values.”
Harry and Meghan, who tied the knot in 2018, welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison, in May 2019. (ANI)
