New Delhi:
The accident took place at around 4.20 am on the carriageway towards Gurugram. Police received a PCR call shortly after the collision and rushed to the spot to begin rescue and investigation efforts.
During preliminary inquiries, investigators found that a Toyota Innova allegedly hit the tempo from behind, causing the three-wheeler to overturn on the flyover. The occupants of the tempo, all residents of Seelampur in northeast Delhi, were travelling to a temple in Gurugram when the accident occurred.
Police identified the deceased as Kripa Devi (47), who died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.
Five other passengers suffered injuries and were shifted to Safdarjung Hospital through CATS ambulances. The injured were identified as Vansh (8), Savitri Devi (60), Naina (34), Naksh (14) and Ishan (2). Officials said the condition of the injured was not immediately known.
The tempo driver also sustained minor injuries in the accident.
According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a team was dispatched to the location after receiving information about the incident. However, by the time firefighters reached the site, Police Control Room personnel had already transported the injured to Safdarjung Hospital and the AIIMS Trauma Centre for treatment.
Police said the driver of the Innova was present at the scene and was immediately taken into custody.
“During initial assessment, the driver appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or some intoxicating substance,” a police officer said.
The accused was subjected to a medical examination, and authorities are awaiting the results as part of the investigation. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings, officials said.
A case has been registered and police are examining all aspects of the incident, including whether drunken driving or reckless driving contributed to the crash.
The accident once again highlights concerns over road safety in the national capital and the risks posed by impaired driving, particularly during early morning hours when traffic movement on major roads and highways begins to increase. Investigators are continuing to collect evidence and record statements from those involved in the incident.
