As a precaution against Cyclone Biporjay, the National Disaster Response Force said on Monday that it has dispatched two of its teams in addition to the three that are currently present in Mumbai.
Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier today issued an orange alert for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch beaches due to the very dangerous cyclonic storm Biparjoy over the adjacent northeast and east-central Arabian Sea.
A storm surge warning was issued by the IMD for the Gujarati districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, and Morbi, stating that a storm surge of around 2 to 3 metres above the astronomical tide is anticipated to inundate the districts’ low-lying areas at the time of impact.
According to the India Meteorological Department, the cyclone is likely to move nearly northward until June 14 morning, then move north-northeastwards and cross Saurashtra & Kutch and adjacent Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat) by noon on June 15.
It will have a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph with gusts up to 150 kmph. On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called a meeting to discuss the Cyclone Biparjoy situation.
On Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange signal for cyclones along the Gujarati beaches of Saurashtra and Kutch.
Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, visited the state emergency operations centre on Sunday to see how well the state’s coastal districts were prepared for potential storms.
On Thursday, Biparjoy, which is currently approaching Pakistan and Gujarat’s Kutchh and Saurashtra coasts, will make landfall there.
