CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan said that the franchise is not much of sure to retain MS Dhoni as uncapped for IPL 2025 mega auction. The BCCI and IPL Governing Council stated that the new rule provides a choice for capped Indian players who have not played international cricket in the last five years or those without a BCCI central contract to be categorized as uncapped.

“We are not sure at this stage. We might not even use it for MS Dhoni. It’s still too early to comment on this because we haven’t had discussions with him,” Viswanathan told TOI. He added that Dhoni, who has just returned from a trip to the US, hasn’t had any discussions with the franchise, but talks might happen soon. “Now I am traveling this week, so there is a possibility of some discussions in the coming week. So there could be some clarity then,” he reiterated.

“We are hopeful of him playing, but it’s a call Dhoni will himself make,” Viswanathan said, indicating that the final decision will rest with Dhoni regarding his participation in the upcoming IPL season.

It would mean any Indian cricketer, who has played no international matches in the last five years or doesn’t have a BCCI central contract, are to be treated as uncapped. Fans are expected all clarity over Dhoni’s future since teams need to submit their retention lists by October 31st every year.
