Despite the extreme challenges being faced by India during the second wave of Covid-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to remain popular, with his approval rating at 66 percent, according to a survey conducted by an American data intelligence firm.

Morning Consult, in its survey, found that PM Modi is ahead of other world leaders of 13 countries, including the US, the UK, Russia, Australia, Canada, Brazil, France and Germany.

“Morning Consult, which tracks national ratings of the elected leaders of 13 countries, shows a 20-point slide over the past year in the proportion of Indians who approve of Mr Modi. Yet at 66 percent in early June, he still outperforms all the rest,” the firm tweeted.

The Morning Consult Global Leader Approval Rating Tracker, with a sample size of 2,126 adults in India, showed 66 percent approval for PM Modi, while 28 percent of those surveyed disapproved of him.

The Prime Minister’s approval rating, however, has come down since August 2019, when the Modi government abrogated Article 370, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir; his approval rating then stood at 82 percent, while disapproval rating was at just 11 percent.

Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi is second in the list of Global Approval Ratings, his approval rating is 65 percent. At the same time, the third number is Mexico›s President Lopez Obrador, his rating is 63 percent.

Australia›s Prime Minister Scott Morrison is at number four in the list of approval ratings with 54 percent. Germany›s Chancellor Angela Merkel is in fifth place with 53 percent. US President Joe Biden is at number six with 53 percent.

Interestingly, for all his charm, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau is at number seven, with his rating being 48 percent. At number eight is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, with a rating of 44 percent. South Korea›s President Moon Jae-in is ranked ninth, with a rating of 37 percent. Spain›s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is at number 10, with his rating of 36 percent.

Morning Consult is a research company that continuously tracks the approval ratings of world leaders. The Approval Rating Tracker was last updated on 17 June.
