Ganesh Chaturthi is a major Hindu festival observed in India, with some of the biggest celebrations taking place in Maharashtra each year. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Maharashtra government has issued strict guidelines regarding public celebrations in 2020.
The state government has issued stringent regulations for the 11-day Ganeshotsav starting from 22 August. According to the state’s orders, the height of all Ganesh idols in public celebrations across the state shall be restricted to four feet, while those in homes will be limited to only two feet. The pandemic has also affected the festival market. Prices of Ganesh idols have fallen with the decrease in sizes. The market for makhar, which is used primarily in decorations, has also taken a hit as there are fewer buyers for the variety offered. The shutting down of public transport has also become a factor in the dampening of Ganesh Chaturthi spirits across the state.In 2020, Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations will commence on 22 August and end with Ganpati Visarjan on 1 September.
