A policeman was shot dead by terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Sunday evening. The cop, identified as 29-year-old Touseef, was targeted by the terrorists in the city’s Batmaloo area.

“At 8 pm, terrorists fired upon J&KP constable Tausif Ahmad near his residence at SD Colony, Batamaloo,” a news agency reported quoting an unnamed officer.

The constable was critically injured and was taken to SMHS Hospital. However, before he could be admitted, Touseef succumbed to his injuries and was declared brought dead on arrival.

Dr Kanwar Jeet Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMHS Hospital, Srinagar said that Touseef had a ballistic trauma in his head. “He was brought dead to the hospital,” he added.

A police official told The Daily Guardian that the area has been cordoned off, and a hunt has been launched to catch the terrorists.

Meanwhile, the mainstream political parties condemned the dastardly act in strong words.

National Conference Twitter handle carried a tweet that said, “Unequivocally condemn the cowardly & dastardly attack on 29 year old policeman in Batmaloo, Srinagar in which he lost his life. No words of condemnation would be enough! May Allah grant him a place in Jannat. Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time of grief.”

“Anguished by the attack in Batamaloo which has claimed the life of @JmuKmrPolice cop Tauseef Ahmed. May his family find strength to bear the loss,” tweeted Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party.

“Touseef belonged to a humble background, he was a very nice person,” said a local who knew the slain cop.

“He was an SPO and was recently promoted to a constable rank. He had completed his police training very recently. I am appalled, I do not know how his family will take this,” he told The Daily Guardian.
