The Congress party on Tuesday alleged that a lack of urgency is being seen by the BJP government in Manipur to contain “arson and violence” and demanded to form a high-level inquiry commission and seek a judicial probe on the Manipur violence.

Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and several other leaders called on President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a memorandum. As per the party, about 100 people have lost their lives and many more have been missing so far in this ethnic violence.

Over 2000 houses have been destroyed or burnt, and the violence has forced around 10,000 people, including women and children, to live in relief camps and other safer places where there is no proper arrangement of health and sanitation facilities.

A huge number of people became homeless due to violence, and most of the educational institutions are closed, and students are deprived of education, the memorandum added.

The party has made 12 demands, including an adequate effort to smother violence across the state and the restoration of peace and normalcy with immediate effect.

The party further added that the Union government should take stern action to arrest all the active militant groups and take proper action against all armed civilian groups to stop armed militants from creating any disturbance in the state.

The Congress Party further added that “the Union government needs to take steps for the rehabilitation of all displaced persons at their original place with the assurance of full security arrangements.”
