Congress MP K.C. Venugopal and CPI (Marxist) floor leader in Rajya Sabha, Elamaram Kareem also gave notice to suspend business and discuss the issue of price rise and imposition of 5% GST on essential items.

The GST council has hiked the prices of many daily essential items. The decision to hike GST on certain items was taken in the recently held 47th GST Council meeting in Chandigarh.

“I hereby give notice under Rule 267 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Council of States (Rajya Sabha) of my intention to move the following motion for the suspension of business. The record-breaking inflation in the country has worsened the situation of the common people amid a huge increase in the process of essential commodities with the recent increase in GST of many other essential commodities,” the notice reads.

ITEMS GET COSTLIER

1. GST on paper knives, spoons, forks, ladles, skimmers, and cake-servers increased from 12% to 18%.

2. GST on power-driven pumps such as centrifugal pumps, deep tube-well turbine pumps, submersible pumps, and bicycle pumps increased from 12% to 18%.

3. Pre-packaged and labelled pulses and cereals like rice, wheat, and flour (atta) will now attract 5% GST when branded and packed in a unit container.

4. Curd, lassi, and puffed rice would attract GST at the rate of 5% when pre-packaged and labelled.

5. LED Lamps, lights, and fixtures, their metal printed circuits board will also witness a GST increase from 12% to 18%.

6. GST on solar water heater and system has been increased from 5% to 12%.

7. GST on cut and polished diamonds will be increased from 0.25% to 1.5%.

8. GST on e-waste will be increased from 5% to 18%.

9. GST on petroleum/coal bed methane will be increased from 5% to 12%.

10. Hotel accommodation priced upto Rs 1000 per day shall be taxed at 12%.

11. Room rent (excluding ICU) exceeding Rs 5000 per day per patient charged by a hospital shall be taxed to the extent of the amount charged for the room at 5% without ITC

ITEMS GET CHEAPER

1. Tax on the transport of goods and passengers by ropeways reduced from 18% to 5%.

2. Renting of truck or goods carriage where the cost of fuel is included will be cheaper as the tax is reduced from 18% to 12%.

3. GST on ostomy appliances reduced from 12% to 5%.

4. GST on several orthopaedic appliances reduced from 12% to 5%.
