Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan secured the prestigious ‘Best Director’ award for his biopic ‘Oppenheimer’ at the Oscars, marking a highly anticipated triumph on Monday.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), The Academy, shared this exciting news and captioned the post, “Congratulations on your win for Best Directing, Christopher Nolan! #Oscars.”

Nolan emerged victorious amidst tough competition from Jonathan Glazer of “The Zone of Interest,” Yorgos Lanthimos of “Poor Things,” Martin Scorsese of “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Justine Triet of “Anatomy of a Fall.”

Prior to the Oscars 2024, Nolan had garnered five nominations across three distinct films but had never clinched an Academy Award. His nominations included Best Original Screenplay for Memento (2002), Best Picture and Original Screenplay for Inception (2010), and nods for Best Picture and Best Director for Dunkirk (2018).

The biopic, taking place amid World War II, tracks Oppenheimer, renowned as the “Father of the Atomic Bomb,” as he grapples with the realization that testing the atomic bomb could trigger a catastrophic event by igniting the atmosphere and leading to global destruction. Nonetheless, he proceeds to push the button despite this understanding.

At the 96th Academy Awards, ‘Oppenheimer’ clinched victories in several categories including Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Supporting Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.

Cillian Murphy takes on the lead role of ‘Oppenheimer’ in a Christopher Nolan film for the first time, following his appearances in several of Nolan’s previous works such as ‘Inception,’ ‘Batman Begins,’ ‘The Dark Knight,’ ‘The Dark Knight Rises,’ and ‘Dunkirk,’ establishing him as a recurring presence in Nolan’s cinematic universe.

The cast boasts a lineup of notable names including Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, Alden Ehrenreich, Josh Peck, Jason Clarke, David Dastmalchian, Alex Wolff, James D’Arcy, and more. Florence Pugh portrays Jean Tatlock, Emily Blunt stars as Kitty Oppenheimer, while Robert Downey Jr. takes on the roles of Lewis Strauss. Recently, Christopher Nolan secured the Best Director award for his biopic ‘Oppenheimer’ at the BAFTA Film Awards 2024.
