In an emotional story out of China’s Hunan province, Wang Ting, now aged 34, has shown uncommon devotion and fortitude following the horrific death of her long-term boyfriend, Zeng Zhi, in a vehicle accident in 2016.
According to a report in the South China Morning Post, Wang accepted the gigantic burden of settling Zeng’s 600,000-yuan debt (roughly US$82,000) and maintaining his family for almost ten years.
After Zeng’s untimely death, Wang found that he had left behind outstanding salaries, bills with suppliers, and loans to himself. Even without a contractual obligation and advises from friends to abandon ship, Wang decided to pay back the debt herself. “If I don’t repay the debt, how would those people feed their children and elders?” she asserted.
To make this promise, she took all her savings 200,000 yuan (around US$27,000) borrowed 60,000 yuan, and even moved to another province in search of a better job. “I want to complete his life story on a perfect note,” she said. “I did not want his name to be associated with dishonesty.”
Welcoming His Family as Her Own
In addition to settling his money matters, Wang assumed the emotional and physical caregiver position for Zeng’s family. With his parents bringing in merely 50,000 yuan each year (equivalent to about US$7,000), Wang provided for them anyway.
Wang frequented visits with his mentally ill uncle, had his father in tow during heart procedures, and vacationed yearly with his mourning mother to facilitate her recovery. Wang also invested in pension insurance coverage to help ensure Zeng’s mother’s economic security.
New Life, Still Unbroken Bonds
Wang did remarry in 2020, but her relationship with Zeng’s family did not change. She asked his parents to her wedding, indicating her feelings clearly: “You will always be my parents and the most important people in my life. I will have six parents from now on.”
Now a successful businessman with two enterprises-one in the food business and another in the tourism industry-Wang lives on, with a sense of purpose and strong emotional attachment, showing that love and commitment can conquer even death.
