Virginia: Shooting at High School graduation ceremony killed 2, 5 injured

At least two of the seven people who sustained serious injuries in a shooting incident outside a theatre where a high school graduation ceremony was taking place on Tuesday evening have died.

The city’s interim police detained two people but later stated that one of them was not involved. A shooting occurred outside the Altria Theater in Richmond, Virginia, following a high school graduation ceremony on Tuesday evening, according to officials, according to reports.

Aside from the two people killed, five others were shot, including a 14-year-old boy and four men. Tracy Walker, a Richmond police spokesperson, confirmed the injuries and stated that there was no immediate threat to the public.

According to Richmond Public Schools official Matthew Stanley, the shooting occurred in Monroe Park following the Huguenot High School graduation. According to a report by CNN, the park is located on the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, across the street from the theater.

“We have cancelled a graduation ceremony from another school scheduled later this evening,” Stanley said.

According to the school system’s website, graduation ceremonies for three schools were scheduled for Tuesday at Altria Theater, CNN reported. A shooting occurred at Monroe Park, according to a Virginia Commonwealth University alert sent at 5:15 p.m. After about an hour, the alert page stated that there was no longer a threat.

Richmond Mayor Levar M Stoney issued a statement about the situation on Twitter, according to reports.

“Currently monitoring the situation at Monroe Park. In touch with RPD and RPS. Will make information available as it comes in. Please avoid the area,” Stoney’s wrote on Twitter.
