A shooting took place at a motorcycle rally in the Red River area of New Mexico, resulting in the death of at least three people and several injuries. Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun confirmed that five people were injured in the incident. New Mexico State Police reported that one of the injured individuals was airlifted to a hospital in Denver. Initially, the police stated that two people had been killed and six were injured, but the numbers were later updated.
According to Mayor Calhoun, all individuals involved in the shooting, who were members of biker gangs, are now in police custody, and there is no ongoing threat to public safety. The New Mexico State Police have secured the scene. The shooting occurred during the Red River Memorial Day Motorcycle Rally, an annual event that draws tens of thousands of participants to the town’s Main Street over the Memorial Day weekend.
Injured individuals were taken to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos and the University of New Mexico Health in Albuquerque for treatment. The first law enforcement officer arrived at the scene within 30 seconds of receiving the call. Additional officers from the New Mexico State Police were dispatched to Red River to assist with the situation.
Mayor Calhoun emphasized that there is an active crime scene and ongoing investigation, leading to the closure of Main Street. State police, county sheriff departments, and local law enforcement have requested that businesses in the area remain closed until the investigation is complete and the crime scene is cleared.
Following the shooting, the town of Taos, located approximately 40 miles from Red River, implemented a curfew until 4 am on May 28. The curfew prohibits the sale of alcohol in retailers, bars, and other establishments during the specified period.
