Pakistan: Imran Khan receives court summons in judge threatening case

According to Pakistan-based Geo News, the Islamabad Police visited former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s residence in Lahore to serve court summons in a judge threatening case.

In May, Islamabad Judicial Magistrate Malik Aman upheld the bailable arrest warrant issued by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the case. However, the court granted Imran Khan’s request for a stay of proceedings on June 1 and adjourned the hearing until 8 June.

The court ruled that the warrant at Imran Khan’s home could not be complied with using proper legal procedures. According to Geo News, the court ordered that Imran Khan’s warrant be followed through legal procedures and that he appear on 8 June.

The charges against Imran Khan stem from a speech he gave in 2022 in which he allegedly threatened police and a female judge after one of his close aides, Shahbaz Gill, was denied bail in a sedition case.

Since his ouster from power in a no-confidence vote in April last year by a united opposition led by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Imran Khan has faced a number of legal cases, according to Geo News.

Imran Khan warned during a rally at Islamabad’s F-9 park that he would “not spare” Islamabad’s inspector-general, deputy inspector-general, and female magistrate, and vowed to file cases against them for “torturing” Shahbaz Gill.

Imran Khan led a rally from Zero Point to F-9 Park in Islamabad in support of incarcerated leader Gill. He said during his speech at the gathering, “We will not spare the IG and DIG.”
