Diplomatic appeals by Zelensky outshine Nuclear Disarmament at G7 Summit

Hiroshima, the site of this year’s G7 summit, is one of just a handful of places in the world that provides a stark reminder of the horrors of war.It is no surprise that Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida chose Hiroshima as the setting for the 2023 G7 meeting.

Ukraine takes priority
The summit’s final communique mentioned a “Hiroshima Vision” for nuclear disarmament but focused primarily on global support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Ukrainian President Zelensky’s unexpected visit added significance to the summit, given the critical state of the war. Leaders released a strong statement condemning Russia’s aggression and violation of the UN Charter. Zelensky’s presence provided an opportunity for countries like India, Brazil, and Indonesia to hear his perspective and potentially change their stance on Russia’s invasion. His direct appeal could become the defining statement of the summit, setting it apart from previous gatherings.

A bigger role for the Global South
Prime Minister Kishida’s goal for the Hiroshima summit was to garner support from major economies for developing nations. His focus on the “Global South” was evident through his visits to countries like Ukraine, Egypt, Kenya, and India. Attendees from South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, India, Brazil, and African nations highlighted Japan’s interest in countering Chinese and Russian influence.
