Everyone is eyeing the forthcoming Ellenabad by-election to be slated on 30 October 2021 as it has been one of the hottest seats in the state and dominated by the prominent OP Chautala family. What history reveals is that the Chautala family or its party Indian National Lok Dal’s (INLD) contestants emerged winners on the seat for maximum times. Presently Abhay Singh Chautala, who has been fielded by the INLD, will face Pawan Beniwal of the Congress party for the third time. It is pertinent to mention that as many as 26 candidates have filed nominations till the last date 8 October 2021 and their documents are yet to be verified till 11 October 2021. The contestants filing nominations are allowed to withdraw the same by 13 October 2021. In this series, the result of the polls will be declared before 5 November 2021.

It is worth mentioning that Abhay survived the seat for the third time, including one by-election earlier. Although, in view of the present scenario, things seem in favour of Abhay and contestants of the opposite parties are on their toes and putting their best to win the election after the INLD made him contest the Ellenabad battle. It is going to be an acid test for the opponents fielded against Abhay. Besides, he has to prove his mettle again as it has become a prestigious fight for him as well as the INLD.

Prior to this, OP Chautala, father of Abhay, contested the three by-elections successfully from Ellenabad, Darba Kalan, and Narwana in 1970, 1990, and 1993 respectively. So if Abhay wins the upcoming by-poll, he will equal his father’s record. After having a glance at the political career of Abhay, what comes out is that he has won a total of four assembly elections so far. So in wake of the historical background of the seat, it can be said clearly that defeating the INLD contestant seems an uphill task for the other parties as it has been the bastion of the Chautala family. However, nothing is permanent in politics as things continue to change.

In continuation to mentioned above, it is worth mentioning that the ongoing farmers’ agitation is most likely to have an impact in the by-poll as Abhay resigned from the seat in support of farmers saying that the ruling BJP government continues to neglect the welfare and rights of farmers. So to some extent, he is likely to get sympathy from the agrarian community but we are going to witness a neck to neck battle undoubtedly. The opposite factions including the BJP and the Congress continue to claim to win the seat and their senior leaders are mulling on every possible strategy to survive the seat.
