The election for the new Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation is scheduled for January 18, as per a notification issued by DC Vinay Pratap Singh. In addition to the Mayor, voting to select the Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor will commence at 11 am.
Nominations will be accepted from 11 am to 5 pm until January 13. According to Vinay Pratap Singh, Deputy Commissioner UT Chandigarh, the election is in accordance with Section 38 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976. The voting will take place on January 18 at 11:00 am in the assembly hall of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation.

The main agenda of the meeting, following the provisions of Sections 38 and 60 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, along with Regulation 6 of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (Procedure and Conduct of Business) Regulations, 1996, pertains to the election of the Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, and Deputy Mayor. Nomination submissions will be accepted until January 13 between 11 am and 5 pm.
The mayoral seat this year is reserved for a candidate from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category. AAP holds four SC category councillors, Congress has two, and BJP has one. The Mayor is chosen from the elected councillors in Chandigarh for a one-year term.
AAP’s Lakhbir Singh switched to BJP on Wednesday before the mayoral elections. In the Congress, Jasbir Singh Bunty is the leading candidate, and Manoj Sonkar is the sole SC councillor representing the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the 35-member House, BJP has 14 councillors, AAP has 13, Congress has seven, and Shiromani Akali Dal has one. BJP MP Kiran Kher, an ex-officio member of the House, also holds voting rights.
