Chahal, Rohit star as India defeat West Indies in first ODI

India folded West Indies for a paltry 176 and then chased down the target in 28 overs to beat visitors by six wickets.

Spinner Yuzvendra Chahal picked four wickets before skipper Rohit Sharma hit a fifty as India defeated West Indies in the first ODI here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

With this win, India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. India folded West Indies for a paltry 176 and then chased down the target in 28 overs to beat visitors by six wickets. Chasing 177, India got off to a great start as the side reached 67 without losing a wicket in the first 10 overs.

However, Alzarri Joseph struck in quick successions as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli departed as India reached close to 100. India were right on track but Akeal Hosein dismissed Ishan Kishan in the 17th over before Joseph removed Rishabh Pant by running him out as hosts got reduced to 116/4.

However, the asking rate was so low that Suryakumar Yadav (34) and Deepak Hooda (26) took India over the line quite comfortably. Earlier opting to bowl first, India struck early in the third over of the match as opener Shai Hope played on an incoming deliver of pacer Mohammed Siraj for 8 as West Indies lost their first wicket for 13.

Captain Rohit Sharma introduced spin in the eighth over as off-break bowler Washington Sundar rolled his arms. The visitors managed to score 39 runs for the loss of one wicket at the end of the first 10 overs of the powerplay. After Sundar and Chahal’s show, West Indies reached the 150-run mark in 36.1 overs. Jason Holder notched up his half-century as he along with Allen brought some respectability to the proceedings.

The 78-run partnership between Holder and Allen was finally broken as Sundar dismissed Fabian Allen caught and bowled for 29 of 43 balls as visitors lost their eighth wicket for 157.

Prasidh Krishna got the prized scalp of Holder dismissing him out caught behind by keeper Pant for 57 of 71 balls. Krishna got his second wicket of the match while Pant took his third catch of the match.

Chahal wrapped up the West Indies team for 176 in 43.5 overs dismissing Alzarri Joseph for 13 caught in the long-on for 13. Chahal finished with figures of 4 for 49.
