World Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway underlined his supremacy as he beat teen Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi in the final of the Julius Baer Generation Cup online rapid chess tournament here today.
The final which was played over two days with two-match of four games each saw the World No.1 from Norway win 2-0 in the second match to pocket the title.
Carlsen who had earlier won the first match 2.5-0.5 needed just a draw in the second match to pocket the title. However, he secured consecutive victories in the opening two games to condemn the Indian to a crushing defeat.
Needing a win on the second day to take the finals into the tie-breaker, the Indian could not muster enough and resigned after 48 moves in the first game. He could not overcome the debacle and lost the next one in 48 moves to have his hopes quashed.
Carslen who has been in terrific form throughout the tournament lost only once in the preliminary stages and his performance in New York has made him the first player to hit the historic 2900 Tour Rating.
