Hours after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on Canada, fans in Ottawa booed during the U.S. national anthem at a hockey game on Saturday (Feb 1).

A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing Ottawa-based singer Mandia performing “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the National Hockey League game. The U.S. team had traveled to Ottawa to face Canada at the Canadian Tire Centre.

The U.S. team faced backlash as fans voiced their anger by booing during the national anthem, just hours after President Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports, excluding energy, which would face a 10 percent levy.

Despite the protest, Mandia continued with her performance. Afterward, she sang “O Canada” and received support from the fans, who waved as she performed.

A similar reaction occurred on Sunday (Feb 2) during a National Basketball Association game between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers, as Canadian fans drowned out the singer’s performance with their boos.

Canada retaliates against US tariffs

On Saturday (Feb 1), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would retaliate against the tariffs imposed by the United States with 25 percent levies on select American goods.

“We’re certainly not looking to escalate. But we will stand up for Canada, for Canadians, for Canadian jobs,” Trudeau stated. He added that while the trade war would impact Canada, it would also have “real consequences” for the American people, including job losses, higher costs for food and gasoline, potential shutdowns of auto assembly plants, and restricted access to Canadian nickel, potash, uranium, steel, and aluminum.

“Many among us will be affected by this, and we will have some hard times. I ask you to be there for each other,” Trudeau said on Saturday (Feb 1). “Now is the time to choose Canada.”

Canadians have shown their support by urging people to avoid using American-made products on social media, with some even canceling their plans to visit the U.S.
