United States President Donald Trump has stirred controversy once again — this time by proposing that Canada become the 51st state of America. As Canadians cast their votes in a closely watched national election, Trump shared a bold message on his social media platform, Truth Social.
In his post, Trump wrote,
“Good luck to the great people of Canada. Elect the man who has the strength and wisdom to cut your taxes in half, increase your military power for free, and grow your businesses with zero tariffs or taxes—if Canada becomes the cherished 51st state of the United States of America.”
He further claimed that the US spends “hundreds of billions of dollars a year” supporting Canada, a financial commitment he argued is “no longer justifiable” unless Canada officially becomes part of the US. Trump highlighted the potential benefits of erasing the US-Canada border, calling it “beautiful” and asserting, “It was meant to be!”
Canadians Vote Amid Trump’s Bold Proposal
Meanwhile, voting is in full swing across Canada. According to CNN, polls opened early Monday in the eastern province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Canadians are choosing between the Liberal Party, led by interim Prime Minister Mark Carney, and the Conservative Party, headed by veteran parliamentarian Pierre Poilievre.
Carney took over the prime ministerial role in March after Justin Trudeau stepped down following devastating polling numbers predicting a Liberal defeat.
Key issues at the heart of the election include Trump’s tariffs, ongoing economic uncertainty, and a severe affordable housing crisis. Voters will decide whether to give Carney a full four-year term or usher in a new era under Conservative leadership.
While Canada’s diverse political landscape features several parties, the main battle remains a tight race between the Liberals and Conservatives.
As ballots are cast and counted, Trump’s unexpected suggestion adds an unusual twist to an already pivotal election for Canada’s future.
