US President Donald Trump has agreed to delay the imposition of tariffs on Canadian imports for at least 30 days following talks with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, on Monday.

The delay in tariffs comes after Trump had threatened to introduce tariffs unless Canada took stronger action against fentanyl smuggling and illegal migration. During their second conversation of the day, Trudeau announced that Canada would establish a special czar to address the fentanyl trafficking issue and would ensure continuous monitoring of the shared border.

Trudeau confirmed that the threatened tariffs that Trump was about to introduce will be held off for a month pending joint talks between the two nations on reaching an agreement. In the same vein, there has been a postponement of the controversial tariffs Trump had announced against Mexico. The reprieve affords both nations the time to engage each other in discussing the border security issues raised by the US administration.

While the 30-day pause gives some respite, the pressure remains on Canada to address the challenges of drug smuggling and unauthorized crossings, issues that have become central to Trump’s trade and immigration policies.
