Carney Set To Unveil Power-Packed Cabinet On Tuesday Ahead Of Parliament’s Return

Prime Minister Mark Carney will unveil his new cabinet on Tuesday, pledging gender balance among ministers. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, with Governor General Mary Simon officiating.

Carney, who was elected as the Liberal Party leader on March 9, first organized a smaller cabinet of only 24 members well below the last 39-member cabinet of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. That transition cabinet was sworn in on March 14, just five days after Carney assumed office.

With Parliament to reconvene on May 26 just 28 days since the federal election Carney’s administration has a tight timeline. It is the second-fastest return to the House of Commons in Canadian history, second only to the 21-day turnaround in 1988.

Although Carney has been prime minister since March, he was formally elected to the House of Commons only on April 28. While campaigning, he promised quick action on a number of top issues, and the stage is now set for a crowded legislative session. Among his highest priorities are the removal of federal impediments to interprovincial commerce by Canada Day and the implementation of the “Canada Strong Pass” to offer free entry to national museums and train travel for young people under the age of 18 when accompanied by parents.
