Canada’s 2025 election kicked off on a fiery note Monday after US President Donald Trump once again threatened to annex Canada as America’s 51st state.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that Canada becoming the US’s “cherished 51st state” was “MEANT TO BE!” The controversial statement sent shockwaves across the political spectrum, energizing the election campaign in unexpected ways.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, leading the Liberal Party, wasted no time in responding. In a video posted on social media, the 60-year-old leader stood firm, saying,

“This is Canada — we decide what happens here. Let’s choose to be united and strong. Canada Strong.”

Carney’s campaign, which had been gaining momentum after the Liberals’ near-collapse under former PM Justin Trudeau in late 2024, received a fresh boost. His message of standing up to Trump’s threats of tariffs and annexation struck a chord with voters.

Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre fired back at Trump’s interference. In a stern post on X (formerly Twitter), Poilievre said,

“President Trump, stay out of our election. The only people who will decide the future of Canada are Canadians at the ballot box. Canada will always be proud, sovereign, and independent. We will NEVER be the 51st state.”

As Canadians cast their votes, Trump’s rhetoric has unexpectedly shifted the narrative, giving Carney’s Liberals an edge in a race that once seemed tilted towards defeat.

One thing is clear — the future of Canada will be decided not in Washington, but at the ballot box by Canadians themselves. ??
