Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Thursday that the longstanding economic, security, and military ties between Canada and the United States have come to an end. His statement followed US President Donald Trump’s decision to impose a 25% levy on vehicle imports, which is set to take effect next week. The tariffs could severely impact Canada’s auto industry, which supports over 500,000 jobs.
Carney Calls Auto Tariffs ‘Unjustified’
Carney labeled Trump’s tariffs as “unjustified” and said they violate existing trade agreements between the two countries. He warned that Trump’s policies had permanently changed the relationship between Canada and the United States, leaving “no turning back” regardless of future trade negotiations.
Canada to Retaliate with Trade Actions
In response to the tariffs, Carney announced that Canada would retaliate with trade actions designed to have maximum impact on the US while minimizing harm to Canada. He emphasized that Canada’s approach would be to “fight, protect, and build.”
No Trade Talks Without Respect
Carney also expressed his willingness to speak with Trump but insisted that substantive trade negotiations would not proceed unless the US showed respect for Canada’s sovereignty. He highlighted two conditions for any negotiations—respect for Canada’s sovereignty and a comprehensive discussion on economic and security matters.
Upcoming Call with Trump
Although Carney and Trump have not yet spoken since Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as PM on March 14, the White House has reached out to schedule a call. Carney expects to speak with Trump “in the next day or two.”
