Amazon lays off 500 employees in India

Amazon has laid off approximately 500 employees in India as part of the 9,000 global job cuts announced by CEO Andy Jassy in March.

According to reports citing people familiar with the developments, the layoffs in India have occurred across verticals such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Human Resources (HR).

However, the Seattle-based tech behemoth has yet to confirm these layoffs. According to a Moneycontrol report, the Jeff Bezos-founded company has shut down ‘Amazon Digital Kendras,’ a seller support function of its e-commerce business in the country, as part of its restructuring in India.

Employees in that division have either been released or reassigned to a different department within the organization as a result. Furthermore, it has suspended some of its seller onboarding functions in tier-2 cities such as Kochi and Lucknow.

However, there is a chance that the Digital Kendras will be revamped and reopened in the near future. Meanwhile, Amazon has gone through its second round of layoffs in recent months. It announced its intention to lay off 18,000 employees in November of last year, its largest workforce reduction to date. The layoffs began in January, with around 1,000 people in India receiving pink slips.
