Most Indian homes had a coir mattress at some point. Firm, flat, a bit unforgiving, and it lasted forever. Then foam arrived, everyone switched, and coir got filed away as the thing you slept on at your nani’s house.
It is worth a second look. The coconut fibre has not changed, but the way it is built into a mattress has, and the things coir was always good at happen to be the things that matter most in an Indian bedroom.
What rubberised coir actually is
● Coir is the fibre from a coconut husk. On its own it is coarse and springy, which is why old coir mattresses felt like sleeping on a mat.
● Rubberised coir is that fibre bonded with latex and pressed into a dense sheet. The latex holds the fibres in place so the core keeps its shape instead of flattening, while the fibres keep all the tiny air gaps between them. That is the whole trick. You get a firm, stable core that still breathes.
Firm, but not the plank you remember
The old complaint about coir was that it was punishing. That came from bare coir with a thin cotton sheet over it and nothing else.
Modern builds layer foam over the coir core, so the surface has some give while the support underneath stays firm. You still sleep on the mattress rather than in it, which is exactly what firm-surface sleepers want, but your shoulder is not resting on a board.
Who it suits
• Back sleepers. A firm, even surface keeps the spine in line without letting the hips drop.
• Anyone in a hot room. Airflow through the core beats any amount of cooling fabric on top of foam.
• Older family members. A firmer mattress is easier to sit on and get up from, which matters more than people realise.
• People who dislike sinking. If memory foam feels slow and enveloping to you, coir is the opposite end of the scale.
• Busy household beds. Coir holds its shape through daily use and does not soften the way cheap foam does.
Who should probably skip it
● Side sleepers who carry weight on the shoulder and hip often need more cushioning than a firm coir surface gives. If you wake with a numb arm or a sore hip, a foam or latex mattress will suit you better.
Same goes for anyone who likes a plush, hotel-bed feel. Coir can be made comfortable, but it will never be soft, and buying it hoping otherwise is how people end up disappointed.
The coir mattress in the Sleepyhead range
There is one, and it is built the way a modern coir mattress should be. The COCO is a high density rubberised coir orthopedic mattress with a natural cooling effect, and it carries 4.7 out of 5 from 165 reviews on the Sleepyhead site.
• Height. A single 6-inch build, which is the height that suits a firm mattress best. Thicker is not better with coir.
• Sizes. Single, double, queen and king, with twelve dimension options from 72 x 36 inches up to 78 x 72 inches.
• Feel. Firm and orthopedic, with the cooling coming from the core rather than a surface treatment.
Because it comes in every size, it works as easily in a child’s room or a guest room as it does on the main bed.
Living with coir through a monsoon
Coir’s one weakness is damp. The fibre is natural, and natural fibres hold moisture if you let them. A few habits keep that from ever becoming a problem.
• Use a protector. Spills and sweat are what actually damage a coir mattress, not body weight.
• Keep it dry. Pull the bedding back on dry mornings and let the surface air out, especially through the rains.
• Rotate it every two to three months. Coir keeps its shape well, but rotating spreads the load evenly across the core.
• Give it a solid base. A firm, even surface underneath, with no wide slat gaps. Coir does not flex to cover a sagging board.
Where to buy, and how long you get to decide
Sleepyhead is a Bengaluru-based sleep and home brand whose range runs from mattresses into beds, sofas, sofabeds, recliners, pillows and home furnishings. Two things are useful to know here:
• The 100 night trial. Moving from foam to a firm coir surface takes some adjusting, and a couple of weeks in is when you really know.
• Not sure which to pick, take the 30-second quiz on our site and it will narrow the range for you.
• Talk to us any day between 9:30 am and 6:30 pm if you want a second opinion before ordering.
Worth a second look
If your last mattress left you warm, or sinking further than you wanted, the best coir mattress for you is probably firmer and plainer than whatever the ads are pushing. Check the size against your bed frame, buy the coir mattress online, and give it the full trial. Your grandparents were onto something.
